Comprehensive Sleep Screenings: Early Detection for Better Health

Good sleep matters at every age — physically, mentally, and emotionally. At Sleep Sound Breathing & Airway Center, sleep screening is where care usually starts: catching sleep-disordered breathing early, before it has a chance to grow into something more serious.

Why Sleep Screenings Matter

Sleep-disordered breathing exists on a spectrum—from mild airway resistance and snoring to severe obstructive sleep apnea. While sleep apnea often requires intervention, many earlier-stage breathing issues can be addressed with preventative measures and less invasive treatments.

Unfortunately, many breathing issues go undetected for years, particularly in children. Catching them early can prevent:

  • Developmental and behavioral issues in children
  • Chronic health problems that develop over time
  • The need for more invasive treatments later in life
  • Academic or work performance difficulties
  • Quality of life impacts for the entire family

Our Screening Approach

A screening at Sleep Sound Breathing & Airway Center may include:

  • Detailed health history: Sleep patterns, daytime symptoms, medical history, and family history of sleep disorders.
  • Physical examination: A look at oral and facial structures — the airway, tongue position, dental arches, and breathing patterns.
  • Sleep questionnaires: Age-appropriate screening tools that flag risk factors and symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing.
  • Home sleep testing: When appropriate, overnight monitoring you can do in your own bed, measuring oxygen levels, breathing patterns, and sleep quality.
  • 3D imaging: In some cases, imaging helps us see airway dimensions and spot potential obstructions.

Who Should Be Screened?

We recommend sleep screenings for:

  • Children who mouth breathe, snore, or have behavioral concerns
  • Children with growth or developmental concerns
  • Patients with tongue-tie or other oral restrictions
  • Anyone experiencing daytime fatigue or poor sleep quality
  • Adults who snore or have witnessed breathing pauses
  • Patients with unexplained health issues potentially linked to sleep

Common warning signs of sleep-disordered breathing that may warrant a screening include:

  • Bed wetting (enuresis) in children beyond the expected age
  • Chronic mouth breathing, day or night
  • Restless sleep, frequent tossing and turning, or unusual sleep positions
  • Hyperactivity, difficulty focusing, or an ADHD diagnosis or evaluation
  • Daytime sleepiness, fatigue, or irritability
  • Teeth grinding or clenching during sleep

Screening matters most for children — breathing issues corrected during development often never come back as adult problems.

What Happens After Screening?

Based on your screening results, we'll develop a personalized plan that may include:

  • Myofunctional therapy to improve oral function and breathing patterns
  • Referrals to appropriate specialists if needed (ENT, allergist, etc.)
  • Follow-up monitoring to track improvements
  • For more severe cases, appropriate treatment options including oral appliance therapy

Whatever the findings, we start with the least invasive option that addresses the root cause of the breathing difficulty.
