Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy: Preventative Care for Proper Breathing and Development
How the tongue, lips, and jaw work together affects far more than the mouth — especially in a growing child. At Sleep Sound Breathing & Airway Center, we help patients of all ages build healthy breathing patterns, proper oral rest posture, and functional swallowing habits early, before small problems turn into bigger ones.
What Is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a program of exercises that corrects improper function of the tongue, lips, jaw, and facial muscles — retraining them to work properly during swallowing, speaking, and even at rest.
Because OMT targets the muscle habits behind many breathing and developmental issues, it often heads off the need for more invasive treatment later. Children benefit most while their oral structures are still developing, but adults see real improvements in breathing and sleep too.
Many exercises can be guided remotely, so we offer online myofunctional therapy via telehealth for patients across Virginia who prefer virtual visits.
Signs That Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy Might Be Beneficial
Children and adults may benefit from OMT if they experience:
- Mouth breathing (especially during sleep or at rest)
- Tongue thrust or improper tongue positioning
- Difficulty with speech or certain speech sounds
- Chronic open-mouth posture
- Snoring or restless sleep
- Chronic allergies or nasal congestion
- Forward head posture
- Difficulty with breastfeeding (in infants)
- Thumb sucking or prolonged pacifier use
- Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism)
The earlier these patterns are caught, the better — many of them can be corrected completely in childhood.
The Long-Term Benefits of Myofunctional Therapy
Proper oral function established early in life can prevent numerous health issues, including:
- Sleep-disordered breathing and potential sleep apnea
- Dental malocclusions and orthodontic problems
- Facial growth and development issues
- TMJ disorders and chronic facial pain
- Persistent speech difficulties
- Behavioral issues related to poor sleep quality
- Digestive problems from improper chewing and swallowing
Our Approach to Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
A typical program at Sleep Sound Breathing & Airway Center moves through four stages:
- A thorough assessment. We start with a detailed evaluation of oral function, breathing patterns, facial structure, and developmental history. For children, that means growth patterns and milestones; for adults, the long-standing habits that may be feeding current issues.
- A customized therapy plan. From there we build a personalized program: exercises to strengthen oral and facial muscles, techniques to establish proper tongue resting position, breathing retraining to promote nasal breathing, strategies to break harmful oral habits, and age-appropriate activities that keep therapy engaging.
- Collaborative care. Therapy works best as a team effort, so we often coordinate with pediatricians and family physicians, ENT specialists, orthodontists and dentists, speech-language pathologists, and — for infants — lactation consultants.
- Patient and family education. You'll leave understanding why oral function matters, how breathing shapes development and health, which techniques to practice at home, and what changes around the house can support proper breathing and oral posture.
Early intervention with myofunctional therapy can often prevent the need for more invasive treatment later in life — the whole point is to build proper function now so sleep-disordered breathing and other complications never develop.
